In case you missed our last episode of An Extra Dose, you can listen to that here!
A little about this episode:
On this episode of An Extra Dose Podcast, we are sharing our hair growth tips, and sharing what information we found out about hair vitamins (and if they *truly* work). We are also talking about ways to be less self conscious, and what we do when we are feeling that way. We finish off with our favorite moments recently, and some favorite products.
We are all shopping for gifts, and if you or the person you’re shopping for is like us, you will love these hair lover-inspired gifts! Whether you have curly, straight, or in between hair, all of these products are great and make great gifts.
Revlon one-step hair dryer
We have heard SO many great things about this hair dryer. It makes drying your hair so much easier, while giving you volume and shine all in one step!
The brush helps to smooth hair, while also creating volume at the roots. The brush has tangle-free bristles, and has two heat and speed settings.
iHome mirror with bluetooth
Everyone loves a good mirror, especially when you’re getting ready or doing your hair. This one has LEDs with high and low settings to give you natural looking light for doing your makeup. We love that it has 10X magnification for when you need to see very close.
Even cooler, you can stream audio via Bluetooth, and you can even use siri and Google Now to voice control music playlists, weather, news.
You can take a call, and since this mirror has a built in Mic, you will still have a clear-sounding voice when taking calls.
Another cool feature that we love the most is that it has a USB port that you can charge your phone with while you’re getting ready.
Babyliss pro nano flat iron
We remember when we got our first flat iron for our hair and were SO excited. We used it every day. This one is one of our favorites, and we actually have a curling iron by the same brand!
This flat iron is ceramic so it gives you instant heat and also glides easily through your hair. We love using this one to straighten or curl our hair.
We found all of these beauty gift ideas at Walmart. They have SO many good finds for anyone on your list, and we love that they offer free shipping on orders over $50, which is great for holiday shopping!
We are SO excited because we are finally sharing an updated hair tutorial with you all, and there is even a video! We had shared one a while back, but this one *should be* easier to follow, so hopefully it is helpful!
Even though we have different hair lengths, and Alexis has a shorter haircut, we still use the same method to curl our hair. We have a few products that are budget friendly to achieve the effortless wave “look”.
What You Need
Curling Iron:
Of course, you’re going to need a good curling iron. We have several that we use, but this Babyliss Pro Nano curling iron is the best budget friendly one we have used. It comes in several barrel sizes, but we have found that either the 1″ or the 1 and 1/4″ is most effective. We have also noticed that a lot of hairstylists use this one, and our hairstylist uses it as well, so you know it is a good one! Also, it is only $31!
Heat Protection Spray:
You need something to protect your hair from all of that heat you are going to put on it. We have several products we like to use, and this Bumble and Bumble Invisible Oil is one of our favorites because it smells good and is so easy to apply!
Shampoo and Conditioner:
This Adria by Thalia shampoo and conditioner smells AMAZING, and is free of sulfates! It really is great at moisturizing and nourishing your hair, and leaves our hair super soft. It is also great for the summer heat, and when using lots of heating tools on your hair!
Hairspray:
Of course, you need hairspray to make your waves last! We don’t like any heavy hairsprays that are hard to brush out, so our go to is this Amika one because it has a flexible hold, meaning it brushes out easily for lots of wear on your hair, and it smells amazing!
Dry Shampoo:
You all know we try to go as long as we can without washing our hair, so dry shampoo is MUCH needed. We swear by this Batiste one and this Amika one. Both smell amazing and do the job!
The Method
Watch the video below on how we curl our hair and create the waves. If you have any questions, feel free to comment below or message us on Instagram.
It is pretty self explanatory, but to start:
Brush and section off the hair.
Spray with heat protection.
Curl hair in 1″ sections away from your face (with clip of barrel facing your face), leaving a small section of hair out of the clip.
Repeat with rest of hair.
Finish off with hairspray.
Brush through curls once hair has cooled off.
Other Tips
We recommend trying to go as long as you can without washing your hair because dirty hair always holds a curl the best, and also looks the best, believe it or not!
Make sure you don’t use the highest heat setting on your irons as that can burn your hair more easily, if you’re not careful
Be sure to brush out your curls when you are finished styling so you don’t look like Shirley Temple 😉
All of these great beauty products and tools we used can be found at Walmart. They have so many products for every person you’re shopping for, or that you may need. Our favorite things to order online are essentials like mascara, nail polishes, dry shampoo, and lip shades. We love that they offer two-day shipping and in-store pickup!
Happy Monday! Hope you all had a good weekend. We didn’t do too much, since the weather was chilly here, but we did do meditation AND some yoga, yay for us! In case you all missed it, we finally (in a long time) have different hair! We both actually have hair extensions for fullness, and since we have been getting so many questions about it, we wanted to give y’all more info on it!
We have talked about the tape-in extensions in this podcast episode and this blog post, but these extensions are actually hand tied extensions, which are different.
WHO DOES YOU HAIR COLOR, CUT, AND EXTENSIONS?
We go to Hair By Viviana. We have been going to her for 5 + years, even when we didn’t have extensions. She is the best! She does get booked very quickly, so we recommend trying to book far in advance if you can!
WHAT ARE HAND TIED EXTENSIONS?
We are not experts, but from our research and understanding, they are extensions where wefts are added to your own hair by beading and then hand-tying the wefts to your natural hair.
WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON CLIP INS?
We actually used to have a halo extension that we wore a couple years ago, and it was great for photos, or if you’re on the fence about permanently having them!
DO YOU FEEL THEY HAVE DAMAGED YOUR NATURAL HAIR?
Honestly, anything you do to your hair is going to do some kind of damage. From what we understand, this is the least damaging type of extension. We have had these for about 3-4 months, and haven’t seen any damage. When we had tape-ins, we did see a little more damage overall.
We get our hair done often, so we know our stylist is always looking out to make sure we don’t have a lot of damage.
WHAT IS THE PRICE RANGE FOR EXTENSIONS?
The price depends on your hair type, how many rows, color, etc. We would recommend scheduling a consultation with your stylist for pricing and all of that info! We believe the actual hair can range from $500-$1500, in addition to the actual process cost.
HOW MANY WEFTS DO YOU HAVE?
We do not know how many we have, but we know we have at least two rows.
DO YOU GET THEM DONE IN TEXAS OR HABIT SALON IN ARIZONA?
We go to Hair By Viviana in Dallas.
WHAT COLOR DID YOU GET?
We don’t know exact colors, but we know that it is a “bronde”, so a mix of blonde and brown.
CAN YOU PUT YOUR HAIR UP WITH THESE EXTENSIONS/WORK OUT?
Yes! That is what is so great. With our tape-in extensions, you could see the tapes if our hair was up, making it harder to hide them. With this method, you can’t see the extensions!
HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?
We get ours moved up every 4-8 weeks. You do not purchase new hair every time your rows are moved up, so this hair lasts quite some time!
HOW HARD IS IT TO WASH YOUR HAIR?
It is not as bad as it was with tape-ins to us. It obviously depends on how much hair you have in general, but for us, we try to only wash our hair once a week (more in this post)! It does feel heavy at first, but you definitely get used to it. The extensions take a little longer to dry than your own hair.
What is also great about extensions is that that they hold the curl so much longer, so less heat on your hair!
WHEN YOU BLOW DRY YOUR HAIR, DO THEY EXTENSIONS COME OFF?
We will say you have to be pretty careful, but we can get pretty aggressive sometimes, and haven’t had any issues!
HOW DOES IT FEEL ON YOUR HEAD?
It honestly is just pretty tight the first day, but after that, you get used to it and it isn’t as heavy as other extensions we have had.
Wanted to share about this look because it is such a good one! As we get into spring months (it is coming!!), we love pulling out some affordable accessories like a marled cardigan/poncho with some leggings or jeans and some cute suede flats, like these coral ones from Sole Society. Not only do these flats look good with leggings and jeans, they will be adorable with dresses and shorts, too! They also come in leopard!
This mini satchel bag is not available anymore, but we will keep you updated if it does come back, but it is available in the bigger option, which is just as cute!

As many of y’all have probably seen on Instagram and our stories, we CHOPPED our hair off! We got SO much positive feedback from you all, and are so glad to hear that you all love it as much as we do! We received a ton of comments and DM’s about how much you all loved it, and how a lot of you all were actually considering cutting yours as well, which we totally L O V E !
In case you haven’t had a chance to listen to our latest podcast episode, An Extra Dose, we talked all about our hair in detail, including HOW we curl it. You can listen to that episode over here.We had soooo many requests to do a hair tutorial, and we promise, we will do on as soon as we can! In the meantime, we did a quick one in Alexis’ story highlights on Instagram, so be sure to check it out!
QUESTIONS FROM YOU ALL :
WHAT MADE YOU CUT YOUR HAIR?
We honestly never thought we would cut our hair this short. It is a MAJOR change. We both had tape-in extensions (more on that in this podcast episode), and with it being summer, it was getting reeeeeeal hot.Don’t get us wrong, we loved our longer hair, but it could become a pain when it was triple digits out, or we were at the pool or beach. Who wants to get their hair all wet when it is all nicely styled, or risk the chance of ruining this very expensive weave, as we like to call it 😉 We had been on a few trips in the last few months where we just didn’t want to get wet, or our hair just became way too much to deal with.
It takes a lot of time to dry the extensions, and it is just a lot of hair to style in general, so we were getting blowouts a lot, and avoiding washing it as much as possible (gross, we know!)
So, since we have a few trips coming up to the beach, and just with the weather so hot, we both decided we were ready for a change! Alexis had seen a hairstyle she liked on Pinterest, so she knew what she wanted! We were definitely scared to do it, but we absolutely LOVE it, and are so so happy with it! We may put them back in the fall, but we will see!
PS- our real hair is a little longer than shoulder-length, so we still cut off a good amount of hair!
WHAT CUT DID YOU ASK FOR?
We both went for a long bob, or sometimes called a “lob”. If you search on Pinterest, you will see a ton of images of this hairstyle! Our hairstylist loved the idea of us both going shorter, and said if we were up for it, to have one of us go a little shorter than the other, just to make it a little different! The back of our hair is just a little bit shorter than the front, and we have some chunky layers throughout!
WHAT COLOR DO YOU HAVE?
We both lightened our hair a little bit for summer, and we always love some lighter pieces around our face! She added in some lighter pieces, as well as retouched our balayage. We have brown hair with caramel and honey tones. We think it is always a good idea to go to your stylist with lots of photos of what you want, so they know exactly what you’re expecting! You can even show them ours!
We took all of our tape-in extensions out, but in order to get the look we wanted, or hairstylist suggested we adding 2-3 tape in pieces at the front for a thicker, heavier look in the front. You do not need to do this if you don’t want them, but we chose to take her advice!
CAN YOU WEAR YOUR HAIR UP?
Yes! We can wear ours in a low pony, or put it in a tiny top bun. The back is shorter, so it is harder to keep it high, but it still works! Plus, it will continue to grow!
If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out any time! XO
